Can I import a manuscript I wrote elsewhere?
Can I import a manuscript I wrote elsewhere?
Yes. PubliWrite gives you different ways to import a manuscript created outside the platform.
You can import a Word document or PDF and continue editing it inside Creator Studio, or you can upload a finished publication-ready file that does not need editing.
Which import option should I choose?
Choose the option that matches the current stage of your manuscript.
Option | Best for |
|---|---|
Import a Word document | A |
Import a PDF document | A |
I already have a finished file | A completed PDF or EPUB that is ready for publication and does not need editing in Creator Studio |
Start writing from scratch | A new manuscript you want to create directly in Creator Studio |
Importing a Word or PDF document
If you already wrote your manuscript in another program, you can import it into Creator Studio.
PubliWrite currently supports editable import for:
- Word documents in
.docxformat - PDF documents in
.pdfformat
After import, your manuscript opens inside Creator Studio as an editable book project.
This means you can continue writing, editing, formatting, organizing chapters, collaborating, and preparing the manuscript for publication.
How do I import a Word or PDF document?
To import your manuscript:
- Go to your Writing Dashboard.
- Click New book.
- Select the import option for your document.
- Upload your
.docxor.pdffile. - Wait for PubliWrite to process the file.
- Click Import & detect chapters, where prompted.
- Review the imported manuscript inside Creator Studio.
PubliWrite will open the manuscript as an editable draft.

What happens during import?
When you import a Word or PDF document, PubliWrite will:
- Read the manuscript file
- Import the text into Creator Studio
- Detect possible chapters automatically
- Split the manuscript into editable chapters
- Preserve headings where possible
- Bring inline images into the editor where supported
- Open the book as an editable, chaptered manuscript
This helps you continue working on an existing manuscript without starting from a blank document.

How are chapters detected?
PubliWrite uses your document structure to detect possible chapter divisions.
Clear headings can help improve chapter detection, but you can still adjust the structure after import.
After importing, you can:
- Rename chapters
- Reorder chapters
- Merge chapters
- Add new chapters
- Remove unnecessary sections
- Correct any chapter divisions that were not detected as expected
Can I continue editing after import?
Yes. Word and PDF documents imported into Creator Studio remain editable.
After importing, you can:
- Edit or rewrite text
- Add and organize chapters
- Adjust formatting
- Add comments
- Invite collaborators
- Use version history
- Use PubliAgent tools
- Preview the book
- Prepare the manuscript for digital or print publication
What should I check after importing?
After importing your document, review the manuscript carefully.
Check that:
- All chapters were imported
- Chapter divisions are correct
- Headings appear correctly
- Paragraph spacing looks clean
- Images appear where expected
- Lists, tables, or special elements display correctly
- No sections are missing or duplicated
- The manuscript is readable and editable
Some complex formatting may not transfer exactly as it appeared in the original file, so it is important to review the imported draft before publishing.
What if my PDF is scanned or password protected?
Scanned or password-protected PDFs may not import correctly.
If your PDF is scanned, PubliWrite may not be able to read the text properly. If your PDF is password protected, the file may need to be unlocked before it can be imported.
If this happens, follow the message shown in the platform and try one of the following:
- Upload a text-based PDF instead of a scanned PDF
- Remove password protection from the file
- Export a new PDF from your original document
- Import the manuscript as a Word
.docxfile instead, if available
Uploading a finished PDF or EPUB
If your manuscript is complete and does not need to be edited inside Creator Studio, choose I already have a finished file.
This option allows you to upload a final:
- EPUB
A finished PDF or EPUB uploaded through this option should already be publication-ready.
These files do not open as editable manuscripts in Creator Studio.
If changes are needed, update the original file outside PubliWrite and upload the corrected version.
What does “publication-ready” mean?
A finished PDF or EPUB should be complete and ready for publication before upload.
Check that:
- The full manuscript is included
- Chapters and sections are in the correct order
- The title and author name are correct
- The formatting is clean and consistent
- Images display correctly, where applicable
- The file opens without errors
- The file is not blank or corrupted
- The file is not password protected
- You are uploading the correct final version
For print publication, the PDF interior should also match the selected print setup, including page size, margins, and layout.
What should I check before importing a Word or PDF document?
Before uploading your file, make sure that:
- The file opens correctly on your device
- The file is saved in a supported format
- The document contains the correct manuscript
- The file is not blank or corrupted
- The file is not password protected
- The manuscript is readable
- You have permission to publish all included content
For PDFs, a text-based PDF will usually work better than a scanned document.
What if the import or upload does not work?
If your file does not import or upload correctly, try the following:
- Confirm that the file uses the correct format
- Make sure the file opens correctly on your device
- Remove password protection
- Check whether the PDF is scanned
- Export a fresh version of the file
- Simplify unusual formatting, where possible
- Refresh the page and try again
- Try another browser or device
If the issue continues, contact PubliWrite support at info@publiwrite.com.
Include:
- The type of file you are uploading
- The file name
- The file size
- The browser and device you are using
- A screenshot of the issue or error message, if available
