How do I choose the right page size for my print book?

How do I choose the right page size for my print book?

The page size you choose affects how your printed book will look, feel, and be produced.

Before selecting a page size, think about your book type, layout, reader experience, and whether your interior file is already formatted for a specific size.

Why does page size matter?

Page size can affect:

  • The final look and feel of your printed book
  • Page count
  • Printing cost
  • Minimum selling price
  • Margins and layout
  • Image placement
  • Reader experience

A smaller page size may create more pages, while a larger page size may reduce the page count but change how the text looks on the page.

What should I consider before choosing?

Before choosing a page size, consider:

  • The type of book you are publishing
  • The amount of text or images in the book
  • Whether the book is mostly text-based or highly visual
  • How you want the book to feel in a reader’s hands
  • Whether your manuscript or interior file already has a fixed layout
  • Whether the selected size works with your cover PDF

Your interior file and cover PDF should match the page size selected during the print setup.

Common page size guidance

Different types of books may work better in different sizes.

For example:

  • Novels and fiction books often work well in smaller or standard book sizes.
  • Poetry books may need a size that supports spacing and line breaks.
  • Children’s books or illustrated books may need a larger or square format.
  • Workbooks, guides, or educational books may work better in larger sizes with more room for notes, exercises, or images.
  • Photo-heavy or visual books should use a size that supports image quality and layout.

There is no single correct size for every book. Choose the size that best fits the content and reading experience you want to create.

What if my file is already formatted?

If your interior file is already designed as a PDF, choose the page size that matches the file.

For example, if your PDF was created at a specific trim size, select the same or closest available page size during the print setup.

If the selected page size does not match your file, your book may have layout issues, margins may look wrong, or the file may need to be corrected before approval.

Can I change the page size later?

Once your print book is published, you cannot update print settings directly from your account.

If you need to change the page size after publishing, you must contact the PubliWrite team. Changes may not be possible if a print order is already being processed.

Important note

Always check that your interior file, cover PDF, margins, and layout match the page size you choose.

If your files do not match the selected print setup, your book may be returned with feedback during the review process.
